The Filbin Family Portrait – San Francisco Family Photographer

I have had the incredible privilege and honor to photograph many wonderful families in my time as a photographer.  However, this family session touched my heart in such a profound and unforgettable way.  I was thrilled to be a witness of the adoption day of this amazing family.  It served as a reminder that parenthood and family goes beyond blood or DNA.  Love always shines bright despite the obstacles and hardships life may throw your way.

This session took place over the summer and I didn’t get the chance to share it.  As I reflected on all of the wonderful blessings of this year, this session remains near and dear to my heart.  It is fitting for me to share it now as we celebrate the season of giving and the season of love.

San Francisco Maternity Session: Abigail + Benoit

It feels like yesterday that I was shooting Abigail and Benoit’s wedding in France.  Now they’re embarking on a new adventure with their first child.  I was honored to be asked to photograph another milestone in their lives.

San Francisco Maternity Session

It was a joy to capture the details of their home.  There were French touches seen throughout in the decor and in their little one’s personal library.  That was one of my favorite little details to capture.  Light streamed through the newly decorated nursery, providing rays of light for Abby and Benoit to reflect on the amazing miracle they created together.  Congratulations to you both on your growing family!

Embrace Imperfections – Lifestyle Photography

I was culling through my images from a recent session and stopped at this image.  I thought to myself, “Should I keep this image in the gallery?”.  I didn’t dwell on it long.  It made it into the gallery.  The image isn’t perfect.  No one was even looking at the camera.  Why did I keep it?  It’s simple really.

This is how I imagined what life must be like on a regular basis for this family.

I imagine it’s not easy to wrangle 5 boys for a photo.  You put them in the great outdoors with trails, a creek and warm weather, things won’t always be predictable.  Though, I will say, this shoot went very smoothly and the family did amazing during their session.

I still wanted this to be a part of the gallery and I’m glad I trusted my instincts.  When this photo came up during the family’s Reveal session, they laughed and said “Of course, he would be the one running off!”.  They immediately marked it as a favorite and found themselves laughing every time they saw it again.

Embrace Imperfection.

Embrace the imperfections.  Embrace your story.  It’s nice to have the classic family portrait, but it’s the random moments that will produce a feeling or spark a memory.  These moments will strike a cord as you view your images years from now and the kids are living their lives and the chaos is at a minimum.

San Francisco Maternity – Jamie + Joel

I had the wonderful opportunity to photograph a Maternity session of very dear friends.  These sessions always mean so much to me because it lets me be a part of a wonderful moment in their lives.  Their session was two parts.  One was taken in their home and the second was taken in San Francisco.

Maternity Lifestyle Sessions

Maternity Lifestyle sessions are always a favorite.  I love seeing the details of the baby’s room and photographing the family in a place where they’ll be spending so much of their time together. The photos really tie the couple together with this incredible new journey they’re about to be on together.

It also offers a more relaxed and intimate setting for mom and dad.  I love seeing photos of the parents in the home they created together.  They’re at ease with each other as they sit on the couch or prop their feet up on the bed.

San Francisco Maternity Session

We took the second part of their maternity session to San Francisco.  It was the city where the first met and where their story started.

In the distance they saw the building where they used to work and shared stories of how their relationship started.  As we moved through their session, it was fun to see how they fed off each other’s energy and simply enjoyed connecting with each other.San Francisco Maternity Photography San Francisco Maternity Photography San Francisco Maternity Photography San Francisco Maternity Photography San Francisco Maternity Photography San Francisco Maternity Photography San Francisco Maternity Photography

Holiday Calligraphy with Triligraphy

This past Saturday led us to a beautiful gem in Benicia, California for an Introduction to Calligraphy class.  The course was hosted and taught by Kay, owner and creator of Triligraphy and took place at the Lighthouse at Glen Cove.  Set along the water and providing beautiful views and warm sun, we sat down to get our creative juices flowing. It was a fun way to spend our Saturday morning and get in some quality time with the girls.

Holiday Calligraphy

I completely enjoyed my time learning the techniques and methods.  Kay’s style is so unique and her passion for her work came through as she engaged her students in a fun and casual environment.

For me, it was simply nice to re-visit my own handwriting.  I spend so much time on a computer that I spend so little time actually writing.  As I worked to find my own style, I found that I leaned towards the flourishes in my handwriting.  Triligraphy

Wood slice ornaments are available in bulk on Amazon.com.  We used sharpies to apply our lettering.  For my own ornament, I went with O Holy Night.  It is my favorite holiday song and was easy to fit onto the ornament.  The rose finish was added ahead of time with acrylic paint.  Using the techniques introduced in the class, I was happy with my first attempt.  Introduction to Calligraphy
